Kona Morris
Storyteller - Writer - Comedian - Educator
Biography
Kona Morris is a storyteller, writer, comedian, and educator.
She is also an editor, writing and storytelling coach, creative problem solver, producer, philosopher, artist, dancer, DJ, cycle breaker, sea captain, and sole minister of The Secular Humanist Church of Freddie Mercury (yes, ha).
Performance, Writing, and Editing
Kona has won The Moth StorySLAM in New York City, Los Angeles, and Boston, and she came in first place for the Ojai Storytelling Festival Story Slam, which was judged by Featured Tellers from the National Storytelling Festival. She has appeared on international television shows and podcasts, such as Stories From The Stage (PBS and the WORLD Channel) and the RISK! podcast. Her episode on Stories From The Stage, entitled, “Getting Away With It,” won a 2025 Signal Award. Kona was a finalist for the 2026 J.J. Reneaux Emerging Artist Award, and she was selected to be one of the 2025 Stone Soup Storytelling Festival New Voices.
Kona starred in Denver’s Live Drunk History Comedy Troupe, for which she won multiple Audience Choice Awards. For 7 years, she was Editor-in-Chief of Fast Forward Press, a Denver-based publishing company and anthology series dedicated to condensed forms of literature, where she also helped to produce and emcee the F-Bomb Flash Fiction Reading Series. Kona’s stories, articles, and prose poems have appeared in a variety of publications, and she has been featured at literary readings, writing conferences, storytelling events, and comedy shows around the world. Kona’s upcoming solo show, “How to Poop in an Outhouse at -72°F,” will be featured at the 2026 NYC Fringe Festival, with performances at Under St. Marks Theater throughout April, 2026. Dates, details, and ticket sales will be posted soon.
Teaching, Workshops, and Coaching
Kona has over 20 years of experience as an educator teaching creative writing, literature, composition, rhetoric, and mythology classes, including 14 years as a full-time and adjunct professor in Colorado. She has also taught grades K-12 in both public and private schools, in a multitude of settings ranging from inner-city high schools to Native American Reservations to Gifted and Talented Education Programs.
Kona currently leads storytelling workshops to inspire others to tell their stories, which are tailored for specific audiences, ranging from professional development for private companies to public school assemblies. She teaches regular storytelling classes at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, CA, as well as the Bethany Arts Community in Ossining, NY, as well as online.
Kona also gives craft talks and offers private coaching sessions for storytelling, solo shows, TED Talks, public speaking, and more.
